Children have been educated in Bwlchgwyn for more than 150 years, and the surviving records offer a fascinating glimpse into generations of village life.

The earliest school logbooks record not only lessons and examinations, but the everyday realities that affected attendance. Children might be absent because of snow, heavy rain, stormy weather, bad roads or simply wet feet. At other times it was lambing or potato picking that kept pupils away.

Illness regularly swept through the school too, with entries mentioning influenza, mumps, whooping cough, chickenpox, measles, scarlet fever, ringworm, colds and inflamed eyes.

Behind these brief entries are the stories of generations of Bwlchgwyn children, and a village school that has changed enormously while remaining at the heart of its community.
